Learning Programs

Power-With Leader Development Program

The skills of power-with leadership are radically different than those of power-over/under, e.g.:

  • intrinsic motivation toward a shared purpose rather than extrinsic movtation (rewards and punishments)
  • connecting people to needs and purpose rather than getting others to do what the leader wants
  • responding consciously aware of needs rather than reacting unconsciously out of anger, guilt or fear
  • creating safety through connection and diversity rather than obedience and conformity
  • creating a culture of trust rather than fear

The Power-With Leader Development Program (PLDP) is a two-year program designed for people within businesses and non-profits to develop the skills and consciousness of power-with leadership. Grounded in the processes of Needs-Based Communication (NVC) and Dynamic Governance (DG), Level 1: "Leading Yourself" focuses on the core skills within each of these processes. Level 2: "Leading Others" applies these core skills to the more complex skill sets of facilitation, mediation, needs-based decisions, systemic feedback, etc. While NVC is often applied to personal healing or intimate relationships, this program is unique in its application of NVC to working relationships within workplace environments.

Level 1: "Leading Yourself"
A 12-Month Learning Program

The essential first step for the Power-With Leader is leading oneself: being aware when one is unconsciously reactive and transforming those moments to conscious response; being aware of how you show up in relationship to others or to the group as a whole ... finding where "power-over/under" lives in you and transforming it to "power-with."

"Level 1: Leading Yourself" was designed for people within businesses and non-profits who would like to learn the skills of needs-based communication and needs-based organizational structures. As the first level of a two-year leadership program, it focuses on the core skills of an integration of the processes of Needs-based Communication (NVC) and Dynamic Governance (DG).

"Level 1: Leading Yourself" opened for enrollments in July 2010.

Level 2: "Leading Others"
A 12-Month Learning Program

In the second year of the program, we focus on applying the core skills of NVC and DG to leading others, whether that is leading another person, a team or an entire organization. Leadership in a needs-based culture moves from "power-over/under" strategies of control and compliance toward a "power-with" structure that is based on autonomy, inclusion, accountability, clarity and shared purpose. The essential skill of the "power-with" leader is based on one's ability to connect people to what matters within themselves, among their working relationships and within the organization itself.

This program is under development and expected to be open for enrollments in Fall 2010.

Note that the terms “Needs-based Communication” and “Nonviolent Communication (NVC)” are used interchangeably on this web site. Our work is based on the work of Marshall Rosenberg which he calls Nonviolent Communication or Compassionate Communication. However, in our work with organizations, we use the term “Needs-based Communication” which we believe more clearly describes the intention of the process and its relevance to organizations.
